Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: Welcome to UT Austin, or welcome back! UTPD hopes you have a safe semester. Remember to be responsible in your decisions regarding alcohol, and avoid walking alone! Bring a friend to study and walk in pairs or groups. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Sunday 8/19/18 and Saturday 08/25/18. 08/24/2018, at 8:35 p.m., 1616 Guadalupe St. Theft of Bicycle: In response to a pattern of thefts, UTPD secured a bicycle at this location with embedded GPS tracking devices. UTPD dispatch was later alerted that the bicycle was in motion. Officers were easily able to locate a man who had stolen the bicycle. This man had a small amount of marijuana and bolt cutters on his person. He was arrested and taken to the Travis County Jail for theft. 08/25/2018, at 1:24 a.m., 309 E 21st St. (San Jacinto Residence Hall) Public Intoxication: Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor; UTPD Dispatch received an automated page indicated an ambulance was en route to the San Jacinto Dormitory. UTPD responded to assist medics in finding their patient. Upon arrival, UTPD officers found that an 18 year old student was very intoxicated and actively vomiting. Once EMS determined she did not need emergency medical care, UTPD attempted to find a sober friend who could take responsibility for the intoxicated student. Unable to do so, UTPD then transported the intoxicated student to Austin’s new Sobering Center. The student was safely transferred to the Sobering Center. The responding officers determined no criminal charges were necessary for this incident. 08/25/2018, at 4:03 a.m., 2000 Pearl St. Driving While Intoxicated: UTPD officers checking West Campus found a driver passed out behind the wheel of his car. After blocking off the wheels of the car for safety, officers woke the driver and asked him to step out of his car. They observed he had urinated on himself and smelled heavily of alcohol. The driver had difficulty speaking due to his intoxication level. The driver consented to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and based on his performance he was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. He was then taken to the Travis County Jail. *The University of Texas Police Department responded to 681 calls for service. That included 203 Alarm Activations, 1 Abandoned 911 Call, 116 Foot Patrols, 98 Traffic Violations, and 5 Welfare Concerns between Sunday 08/19/18 and Saturday 08/25/18.
