Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: Keep belongings out of sight when you park your car Remember, property thefts are the No. 1 crime at the university, but theft often can be averted by eliminating temptation. Make sure to place valuables out of sight. And always close car windows, lock all doors and take your keys with you. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Sunday 8/26/18 and Saturday 09/1/18. 08/29/2018, at 11:45 p.m., 2500 University Ave. Suspicious Vehicle, Warrant Arrest; While patrolling campus dormitories, a UTPD officer observed a white van was double parked. UTPD had received anonymous tips about a white van in the area of dorms throughout the night from a concerned citizen. Officers determined the van was there to pick up electric scooters to recharge them, however the driver had outstanding arrest warrants. The driver of the van was arrested and taken to the Travis County Jail for the warrants. 08/30/2018, at 2:00 p.m., 307 E 21st St. (Clark Field). Theft of Bicycle, Evading Arrest and Detention, Criminal Trespass; A good Samaritan reported a man cutting the lock off of a bicycle at Clark Field, and called UTPD. Officers arriving on scene saw the suspect and ordered him to stop, but the suspect fled the area. With some effective teamwork, officers were able to safely take the man into custody and return the bicycle to its rightful owner, a UT Student. The man was arrested for numerous criminal charges and transported to Travis County Jail. The good Samaritan will be provided with pizza from UTPD’s Hungry for Justice program. Remember, if you provide UTPD with information that solves a crime that occurred on campus, we’ll buy you a pizza! 09/01/2018, at 4:55 p.m., 1400 Martin Luther King Blvd. Driving While Intoxicated, Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle; UTPD Dispatch received a report of a car accident. Officers learned a car had rear ended a Capital Metro bus, then attempted to leave the area, and the driver appeared to be intoxicated. The driver declined to cooperate with the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested for DWI. Officers also determined the vehicle was stolen. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver was transported to Travis County Jail. *The University of Texas Police Department responded to 786 calls for service. 268 Alarm Activations, 35 Suspicious Activity Investigations, 123 Foot Patrols, 98 Traffic Violations, and 9 Welfare Concerns between Sunday 08/26/18 and Saturday 09/01/18.
