Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: In lieu of a crime prevention tip this week, The University of Texas at Austin Police department would like to extend condolences to the family and friends of UTPD employee Tommie Lias. Tommie served proudly as a Guard for UTPD since 2012, and served in fixed-post positions in both the LBJ Presidential Library and at the UT Administration Building. Tommie was always quick with a smile and a handshake for fellow UTPD employees and those that occupied the buildings under his watch. Tommie was respected by all who knew him, and will be sorely missed by UTPD and the community as a whole. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Sunday 9/9/18 and Saturday 09/15/18. 09/10/2018, at 8:23 p.m., 300 E. 23rd Street (Winship Circle) Criminal Trespass; A UTPD officer on a foot patrol of the area observed a male subject who was having difficulty walking near Winship Circle. The officer began speaking with the subject to check on his welfare. Upon approaching the subject, the officer recognized the individual as an unauthorized person on campus who has multiple prior Criminal Trespass Warnings. UTPD dispatch confirmed that the individual had six prior Criminal Trespass Warnings dating back to 2016. The officer placed the individual under arrest and transported him to Travis County Jail after issuing him another Criminal Trespass Warning. 09/15/2018, at 2:05 a.m., 700 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Driving While Intoxicated; A patrolling UTPD officer stopped at a red light observed a vehicle that did not have lights on when required at night. The officer stopped the vehicle, and upon speaking with the driver, the officer immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol. When asked, the driver told the officer he had consumed one beer earlier in the night, then later told the officer that his last beer had been at approximately 1:00 a.m. The individual agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, however halfway through he told the officer that “no one” could take the required amount of steps to perform the test correctly. The individual then refused to continue the test when he was told he could not practice first. The officer determined that the individual was intoxicated and could not safely operate the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Travis County Jail. 09/15/2018, at 8:30 p.m., 2100 San Jacinto Blvd Public Intoxication; During the UT vs USC football game, a UTPD officer observed a male leaning against a bicycle rack for support while holding a large can of beer. When the individual attempted to leave, while walking his bicycle, he fell off the sidewalk into the street. When the officer approached the individual he could detect a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. The officer determined through an investigation that the individual was intoxicated to the point he was a danger to himself or others. With the individual’s permission, the officer helped secure the bicycle to the nearby bicycle rack for safekeeping. The male was then transported to the Sobering Center. No charges were filed for public intoxication. *The University of Texas Police Department responded to 860 calls for service. 257 Alarm Activations, 59 Suspicious Activity Investigations, 116 Foot Patrols, 57 Traffic Violations, and 10 Welfare Concerns between Sunday 09/09/18 and Saturday 09/15/18.
