Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: Women in the UT Austin Community: UTPD wants you to be empowered and safe! Sign up for RAD’s free 16-hour women’s self defense class. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention and risk reduction, and incorporates hands-on defense training. Registration is currently open to females for classes at different times throughout the semester. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Monday 10/01/18 and Saturday 10/06/18. 10/01/2018, at 5:38 p.m., 310 Inner Campus (Goldsmith Building) Criminal Trespass; UTPD was dispatched to a report of a suspicious man at Goldsmith Hall, near the construction replacing the West Mall Fountain. After an investigation, it was determined a transient man had been urinating onto a fence, and his actions alarmed students going to class. After a search of many areas on and off campus, the call was closed as "Gone Upon Arrival," as the suspicious person could not be located. An officer remained in the area and was talking to students about their studio projects when he observed the suspicious man return. When this man was identified the officer learned he had been issued a Criminal Trespass Warning for all UT Campus a few weeks earlier. The subject was arrested for Criminal Trespass, and he was taken to Travis County Jail. 10/06/2018, at 14:00 p.m., 1500 Red River (Dell Seton Medical center) Criminal Trespass; At the Dell Seton Hospital, a woman repeatedly returned after being discharged. She did not need medical services. After several iterations of staff asking her to leave, a UTPD office issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. She soon returned. The officer yet again warned her she would be arrested if she did not leave, or if she returned without need of medical services. The woman left, but again she soon returned. The officer then ran an inquiry and found this woman was wanted by Travis County for a Failure to Identify Warrant. She was arrested on this warrant, as well as Criminal Trespass, and transported to Travis County Jail. 10/03/2018, at 12:51pm p.m., 2300 San Jacinto Blvd. Assault; UTPD officers were flagged down by a UT Staff member who had witnessed an assault between two women near Winship Circle. Officers were able to locate and identify both parties to the assault. One was a transient displaying unusual and belligerent behavior. Based on their investigation, and a res gestae statement from the suspect, it was determined a homeless female became upset with a UT Student walking while looking at her phone, and pushed her face with her hand. The suspect was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning to never return to UT Austin property, and arrested and transported to Travis County Jail. The victim was not injured. This incident is a great example of the value in calling for help as soon as you see something unsafe, even if it didn’t relate to you directly. UTPD is a good resource to use when you observe someone who is acting strangely, transient or not. Also, always be mindful of your surroundings, which you can help accomplish by walking in groups and putting your phone away until you get to your destination. *The University of Texas Police Department responded to 585 calls for service. 205 Alarm Activations, 32 Suspicious Activity Investigations, 86 Foot Patrols, 24 Traffic Violations, and 8 Welfare Concerns between Monday 10/01/18 and Saturday 10/06/18.
