Nov. 18, 2018 Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: Use a two-lock locking system when securing your bicycle on campus. Austin has one of the highest bicycle theft rates in the world. Two locks take twice the time, tools and energy for a potential thief to defeat. The primary lock should be a U-shaped lock that uses a flat key, and the secondary lock a self-locking cable. Also, take a few minutes and register your bicycle online with Parking and Transportation Services. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Sunday 11/11/18 and Saturday 11/17/18. 11/11/2018, at 6:00 a.m., 1900 University Ave (AT&T Conference Center) Driving While Intoxicated: Security at the Conference Center Garage reported a man struggling to enter a vehicle while the car alarm was activated, with glass on the ground. UTPD officers stopped the man in a different car. The driver had an interesting story about the broken window, but while explaining it, officers couldn’t help but detect a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver also showed many other signs he may be intoxicated, such as being confused about why he had driven to campus. After performing a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, the driver was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and taken to Travis County Jail, where he consented to give a sample of his blood to establish his blood alcohol concentration. 11/12/2018, at 12:50 a.m., 1700 Guadalupe Street Possession of Controlled Substance, Warrant Arrest: A UTPD officer driving on a one-way street observed a vehicle’s headlights facing his car, and stopped the vehicle travelling the wrong way on Guadalupe Street. The officer found that the wrong-way driver had thirteen active suspensions on his driver's license. Unfortunately, this driver also had no vehicle insurance. Further, the driver had warrants relating to a traffic ticket he had failed to come to court to resolve. The driver was extremely cooperative. So cooperative, that when asked to step out of his car due to his warrants, he handed an officer his bag of marijuana, his scale, his grinder, his empty baggies, and his bag of Xanax. The driver also agreed to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. He was found to be sober, however he was arrested for the warrants and for the Xanax. He was transported to Travis County Jail. 11/17/2018, at 7:42 p.m., 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Theft: A UTPD Officer assigned to security at the Texas vs. Iowa State game observed a patron use an ATM and then immediately pay cash to an individual wearing an “Event Staff” jacket. The patron then appeared furtive, trying to avoid going near the officer. The officer asked this patron what he paid the event staff for, and learned the event staff was admitting people into the game, without tickets, in exchange for cash. Officers were able to recover the $100 from the Event Staff member, which they returned to the patron. The Event Staff member was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and a citation for Theft, and was terminated on the spot. The patron was unable to remain at the game due to not having valid tickets. Remember, the only way to ensure you are gaining legitimate entry to athletic events is by purchasing tickets from the UT Box Office and other authorized ticket dealers. *The University of Texas Police Department responded to 682 calls for service. 203 Alarm Activations, 32 Suspicious Activity Investigations, 112 Foot Patrols, 56 Traffic Violations, and 17 Welfare Concerns between Sunday 11/11/18 and Saturday 11/17/18.
