Don’t forget to connect with UTPD via Twitter and Facebook, and remember you can reach out to your campus District Representative with any non-emergency concerns or questions you have. Other great social media resources include the Twitter feeds for UT Austin’s Office of Campus Safety and the Austin Police Department. Martin Luther King Blvd. Assist Outside Agency/ Driving While Intoxicated/ Evading Arrest or Detention/ Failure to Render Aid: A UTPD officer heard over the Austin Police Department radio channel that one of their motorcycle officers had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The UTPD officer was already near the location and spotted an abandoned car with recent collision damage. Among the damage was a piece of APD equipment. UTPD officers coming to assist spotted a man two blocks away drenched in sweat. The man appeared to be trying to avoid the officers, so they detained him and identified him as the owner of the wrecked car. The Austin Police Department then arrived and arrested the suspect from Driving While Intoxicated. Safety Tip: UTPD and APD monitor each other’s radio traffic and work together frequently. Due to how easily and quickly information can be shared, it’s much easier to successfully resolve many situations. If you are wondering which agency will answer your 9-1-1 call, don’t. Just dial 9-1-1, we all work in partnership to help you. Drinking and driving can have profound consequences. The APD officer suffered a broken hip, and UTPD wishes him a speedy recovery. 8/30/2019, 2:00 p.m. Panic Alarm: Student workers at a UT building felt unsafe when someone near them began making disturbing comments. They interpreted the comments as threatening. They followed their training and used a panic alarm on their desk to get help. UTPD officers arrived a few minutes later after the concerning individual had left the scene. Community Engagement officers ensured the safety of the department and took note of the circumstances surrounding the disturbance. They referred the matter to UTPD’s Investigation and Analysis Division and UT Austin’s BCAL team to resolve the situation before it escalates further. Safety Tip: It’s a good idea to think in advance about various strategies for reaching out for help. Think now about which option is most appropriate for various situations. If you feel unsafe and need help now, never hesitate to call or text 9-1-1. Dispatchers can ask questions in real time, leading to the fastest and most effective response. Sometimes that’s not practical, for example, if you do not want someone in your presence to know you’re dialing 9-1-1. Panic alarms are certainly appropriate in those cases. In Austin and on campus, other options include texting your location to 9-1-1, and then answering questions from the 9-1-1 dispatcher via text. The Behavior Concern Advice Line (512-232-5050) is more appropriate for concerns that aren’t an immediate threat to our community. BCAL is a partnership between UTPD, the Employee Assistance Program, and the Counselling and Mental Health Center. If you’re not sure who to contact, they are the perfect place to start. They will maintain the confidentiality of your conversation to the extent permitted by law and will try their best to help the subject of your concern. What’s most important is that you share your concerns sooner rather than later. If you would like UTPD to provide a presentation on these communication options, we’re happy to accommodate. Just reach out to your District Representative. 8/30/2019 at 11:48 a.m., 309 E 21st St. (San Jacinto Residence Hall) Burglary: A student left his room without locking his door. When he returned an hour later, his jewelry and electronics were missing. UTPD responded and developed several leads in their investigation, which is ongoing. Safety Tip: Theft remains the primary crime in our campus and with most cases, it was a crime of opportunity. Very often, students feel safe and are friends with everyone who lives near them, so they don’t lock their doors. However, locking your doors is the best way to deter theft. In addition to locking your doors, taking note of your serial numbers increases UTPD’s ability to investigate stolen property, and also UTPD’s ability to return found property to its owners. You can record your serial numbers on our website here: https://police.utexas.edu/services/property You can also report your lost property here: https://police.utexas.edu/services/lost-found 8/27/2019, at 1:58 a.m., 201 E 21st Street. (Jester West Residence Hall) Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UTPD received an anonymous report of an unconscious woman being carried into Jester by a few men. A Resident Advisor was able to electronically communicate with her neighbors to find witnesses to help determine where she was. Officers quickly located the student alone in her own room. They learned her roommate had gotten some friends to carry her into the room in hopes of avoiding attention due to the student drinking alcohol while underage. Officers were able to ensure the student’s safety and referred the matter to the Dean of Students. Safety Tip: It is crucial UT students understand how dangerous binge drinking is. UTPD is happy to provide alcohol safety education, particularly to groups at Residence Halls. Having a friendly, but honest conversation with a District Representative can help students understand why avoiding help when you need help is not necessary. By calling UTPD in this situation, Medical Amnesty would have been invoked, eliminating criminal consequences. By not calling UTPD, the potential for charges is much greater. UTPD is not focused on writing tickets or making arrests of students who need medical attention or safety, and in addition to Medical Amnesty we rely heavily on Austin’s Sobering Center instead of making Public Intoxication arrests.
