She parked the vehicle and shut off the engine. A fire was visible under the hood of the vehicle and the Austin Fire Department responded. Additional officers arrived to keep people away from the car as the fire intensified. Firefighters were able to put out the fire and Environmental Health and Safety determined the area was safe. No one was hurt, but unfortunately the vehicle was badly damaged. Safety Tip: The most important thing to do if you smell smoke or see flames coming from your car is to act quickly and calmly. · Find a safe location to park the car away from others · Turn off the motor and take the keys out of the ignition · Get everyone out of the car and keep everyone at least 100 feet away from the car · Dial 911 and tell dispatchers your exact location 9/14/2019, at 4:00 p.m., 2401 Whitis Ave. (Andrews Residence Hall) Theft: A student found the front wheel of his bicycle stolen. Safety Tip: This is a common crime, and easily prevented. Those who lock only the front wheel of their bike to the bike rack, may find that a thief detached the wheel and took the rest of the bike. Those who lock the frame of their bike to the rack, but did not secure the wheels may find that a thief took a wheel to complete the stolen bike they just took. To properly secure a bicycle, lock a u-lock to the frame and bike rack. Also use a cable lock to secure the wheels of the bike to the frame and bike rack. 9/12/19, at 2:22 p.m., 2300 San Jacinto Blvd. Indecent Assault/ Unlawful Restraint: A man inappropriately touched another person at a bus stop. Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call and arrested the man for Indecent Assault, a recently enacted penal code offense. The Victim Advocate Network responded and provided support. Safety Tip: The specifics of this particular call are private, and less important than the safety lesson: reporting sexual harassment on the street may prevent future harassment and more serious offenses. A call to 9-1-1 raises institutional awareness, allows you to communicate the seriousness to the offender, and has a powerful impact on public safety. The chances of successfully investigating these offenses and arresting suspects is greatest immediately after the incident. We are thankful to the students who urgently called in this crime. This incident is also a great example of the value of the Victims Advocate Network, which is a team of staff and faculty who serve our community in times of distress. 9/12/2019, 2350 Robert Dedman Blvd. (Performing Arts Center) Public Intoxication: An officer observed a woman lying on the ground in distress. When he offered help, the woman told the officer she broke her foot. As an ambulance was on the way, the officer recognized many signs of public intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol and disorientation. It was determined that the foot was not broken. The woman was released to the care of a sober friend, who took responsibility for her. No charges pursued. Safety Tip: Having a sober friend with you when you drink will always be one of the best ways to have a safer evening.
