Austin/Travis County EMS also responded to ensure the man was okay. EMS was able to determine the man was not in a medical emergency, however he still showed a strong odor of alcohol and had slurred speech. The student handed the officer a driver’s license. The officer checked the ID with his Handheld Data Device, but the database determined the ID fictitious. The officer seized the fake DL. The student was not able to walk or stand safely due to his intoxication level, and the officer determined it was not safe to let the man go. The student was taken to the Austin Sobering Center. No criminal charges were pursued, and the matter will be referred to the Dean of Students. Safety Tip: Having a sober friend with you will help you get home safely. When UTPD encounters someone who is intoxicated our goal is not criminal charges, but rather simply safety. By taking this student to the Austin Sobering Center, he was in medical care and received literature on addiction. 9/24/2019 10:00 a.m. Fraud: UTPD took a report of fraud from a UT International Student. Someone had told the student that they were with the police, and would arrest and then deport the student if he did not pay a large sum of money over the phone. The caller knew specific details about the student. The student cooperated with the hoax caller, giving him a substantial sum of money. Safety Tip: This is a common fraud scam that often targets international students whose information is available on the UT Directory or Facebook. Two tips can help prevent this crime. Maximize your online privacy by restricting your UT Directory information and keeping specific details off social media to the extent you’re able. https://utdirect.utexas.edu/registrar/myinfo/sdr_restrict.WBX?disp_instruct=Y The IRS, UTPD, FBI and all other government agencies will never ask for payment over the phone, nor ask for your personal information. Be suspicious of all unsolicited phone calls. If the caller is a legitimate law enforcement, university, or government official they will be happy for you to look up their organization’s phone number, call back, and ask to speak with the person who called. If you are suspicious that you are receiving a fraudulent call, give UTPD a phone call at 512-471-4441, extension 9, and a UTPD officer can help you analyze the situation. Sharing this tip with international students in the university community can greatly reduce the success of this scam. 9/27/2019 5:45am, 201 E. 21st St (Jester Academic) Criminal Trespass: UTPD received a 911 call from a woman walking to work who believed a homeless man was following her for several blocks and into a UT Building. Officers arrived at her location within moments and recognized a homeless man UTPD has had numerous involvements with. Due to this man’s numerous Criminal Trespass Warnings, he was arrested immediately and transported to Travis County Jail where he was provided with mental health assistance. Safety Tip: Your cell phone is the most powerful safety tool you own. Keeping it charged, calling 911 any time you feel unsafe, and knowing your location, are all important ways to remain safe. Thanks to the Office of Campus Safety, each UT building has a Celebrated Entrance with a Safety Hub, and these hubs include a 911 callbox. Each UT Austin classroom also has an Emergency Guide located near the entrance, with that room’s exact location. Never hesitate to call UTPD if you feel unsafe!
