UTPD Announcements: Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Join us next Monday, November 11th in the Avaya Auditorium in POB 2.302 for a practical discussion on active shooter events. We’ll provide options that adhere to the Run, Hide, Fight protocol. FREE PIZZA! We want you to call 911 anytime you feel unsafe, and if you do—you just might get a free pizza! Under our new Safer by the Slice program, certain crime tips, or life-saving intervention will be rewarded with a free 16-inch pizza redeemable at Jester City Limits. It’s our way of saying thank you. October 26th, 2019, 4:30 p.m., 100 E. 21st St. Criminal Mischief: A Good Samaritan observed a car drive through the gate arm on Speedway Pedestrian Mall and called 911. The arm was bent and damaged. The car then proceeded through 21st Street and left campus. Thanks to the timely call, investigators have great information about the responsible vehicle. Safety Tip: We have multiple controlled access points on campus: 24th Street, 21st Street, and Speedway. Just a few years ago drivers could freely pass through. The Amazon Hub Locker brings additional traffic to the 21st Street area, as well as the popular PCL Library and Gregory Gymnasium. With the Speedway Pedestrian Mall restricted to pedestrians, students are safer when walking through campus. If you’re planning to drive to a UT Austin building, give yourself plenty of extra time. If you learn that you can’t drive directly where you’re going, be patient. Decisions made in frustration can lead to serious problems when you’re behind the wheel. If you are not familiar with accessing an area of campus, the best practice is to park at the nearest UT parking garage and plan a short walk from there. October 30, 2019 at 1:27 p.m., 2109 San Jacinto Blvd (UT Team Shop) Failure to Identify when a fugitive/ Warrant for Failure to Identify when a fugitive/ Criminal Trespass: A UTPD officer saw a familiar man walking down San Jacinto Boulevard and checked with a supervisor to determine exactly where he had seen that man before. As the man walked into the UT Team Shop, the Officer got verification that this man had been arrested by UTPD for stealing from the UT Team Shop a few months ago. The officer also learned that UTPD had issued a Criminal Trespass Warning during that previous arrest barring the man from that particular location and all of campus. The officer detained the man and asked for identification, but the man gave a fictitious name and date of birth. The officer arrested the man for Criminal Trespass and learned that he had a previous warrant for Failure to Identify. Safety Tip: It is better to say nothing to the police than to lie. Giving the police a fictitious name is a crime and if you do this while you’re a fugitive it’s a more serious charge. Because UTPD officers in the Community Engagement Division are responsible for a specific part of campus they often start to recognize patterns and people. This is incredibly helpful in our mission of keeping the community safe. You are probably the same with the part of campus you work or study at the most. If your instincts say there’s a problem, ask yourself if there is specific behavior that makes someone suspicious or something else that you find concerning. If the issue is happening now, dial 911. If it isn’t time sensitive, feel free to let your officer know by emailing your district representative. November 2, 2019, 1:43 a.m., 201 East 21st Street (Jester West Dormitory) Public Intoxication: A UTPD officer was dispatched to Jester West for an intoxicated subject. When the officer arrived, the subject was found semi-conscious lying in the grass. Officers learned his friend called 911 to get him help. The friend stated that they went to an off campus party. The subject was underage. The friend also said the subject fell and hit his head at some point. He was treated by EMS. Though the subject committed the offense of underage consumption, no charges will be filed because of medical amnesty. Safety Tip: UTPD’s mission is to “Keep you and our UT Community Safe.” Law enforcement is one tool among many UTPD can use to pursue this mission, but often the decision to not pursue charges is also a tool we can use. Our decision to not pursue criminal charges in alcohol overconsumption ensures that students who are aware of these mistakes feel comfortable calling UTPD for help. UTPD also diverts any public intoxication subject to the Austin Sobering Center in lieu of charges, and this does not only apply to alcohol intoxication. Consider inviting UTPD to talk to your fraternity, sorority, or student organization about alcohol safety by using this URL: https://police.utexas.edu/community/presentations Don’t forget to connect with UTPD via Twitter and Facebook, and remember you can reach out to your campus District Representative with any non-emergency concerns or questions you have.
