Report for 11/26/2019

UTPD Announcements: HAPPY THANKSGIVING! We wish you safe travels. Please do not drink and drive. 11/17/2019 201 E. 21st Street (The Spanish Oaks Terrace at the Jester Residence Hall) Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UTPD officer observed an intoxicated student being held up by a friend outside the residence hall. The friend said the student had consumed an unknown amount of an alcoholic beverage that evening. The UTPD officer requested EMS to assist. Medics evaluated the student and the officer responded to another call. Later, that morning, the officer returned to Jester Residence Hall where he encountered the same student sleeping at the entrance to Jester East. The student was lucid and able to walk and talk normally, no longer showing any sign of intoxication. The officer walked the student back to the residence hall to ensure they got home safely. Safety Tip: If you’re the sober friend, be responsible and reliable. Keeping up with how much your friends are drinking, and checking on them periodically can be the difference between safe and unsafe. Alcohol intoxication can sneak up on your friends. If you find your friends need help, do not hesitate to call 911. UTPD’s decisions will be based on you and your friend’s safety, not on criminal charges. Criminal charges are a last resort. Leaving your friends unattended, before they get home is very unsafe. 11/17/19, 2300 Guadalupe St. (The Drag) Free Speech Activity: A student contacted UTPD to report proselytizing that concerned them. The student explained that on two separate occasions that day when walking along Guadalupe, a person with a religious group offered to take the student on a shopping trip. The student declined and left without incident both times, but was concerned. UTPD checked the area when this was reported and found nothing suspicious. Safety Tip: Patience is key. When you encounter groups in public you do not wish to engage with, it’s often a good strategy to simply ignore them. By ignoring and moving on about your day, you can avoid the situation. These groups usually understand the laws and will not impede you. If you feel unsafe, call UTPD to discuss the situation. 11/19/19, 9:04 a.m., 305 W. Inner Campus Drive (Sutton Hall) Theft: UTPD took a report from a student who secured their bicycle to a rack with a cable lock in the morning, and returned that night to find the bike missing. Safety Tip: Register your bike with PTS. It is required and will be helpful in helping us get your bike back to you if it is impounded. Also, double lock your bike using both a cable lock and a U-lock. Check out this video to learn how to use the locks: https://parking.utexas.edu/bike/locking-your-bike. Do all of the above to help us deter theft! The more bikes registered on campus, the louder the voice of UT’s cycling community. Finally, consider bringing your bicycle home with you between semesters. 11/21/19, 11:47 p.m. 201 E. 21st St. (Jester Residence Hall) Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UTPD assisted Austin/Travis County EMS with a subject vomiting on the floor of a study lounge. After medics helped stabilize the vomiting, the subject stated they consumed a full bottle of wine and smoked marijuana. EMS took the person to the Sobering Center. Safety Tip: Combining alcohol and marijuana, is called “crossfading.” The effects can be dangerous. Medical research has shown that alcohol greatly increases the THC absorbed in the body. 11/23/19, 8:15 a.m., 302 w. 24th St (Littlefield House Alley) Assault Family Violence/ Possession of Dangerous Drugs: A UTPD officer was flagged down for a report of a fight in progress. They found a person bleeding from their face. They refused medical assistance. A different officer observed another person furtively leaving the scene and detained them. Upon further investigation, officers found that the two subjects were married and family violence had occurred. One person was arrested. During a search prior to being taken to jail, officers found prescription drugs on the person. Safety Tip: Under no circumstances is domestic violence tolerable, and if a primary aggressor can be established, UTPD will arrest that person.
