Though the drivers involved declined medical assistance, injuries were apparent and EMS was requested. Officers noticed suspicious clues about the scene. There were a lack of skid marks before the impact location. One of the drivers had slurred speech and walked into the roadway. The officer asked that driver to step onto the sidewalk and complete a Standardized Field Sobriety Test. The driver’s performance on the test indicated they were not in full control of their mental and physical faculties. They were arrested for DWI. When the officer inventoried the driver’s impounded car, he found a sedative that was not prescribed to the driver and marijuana. The driver was transported to the Travis County Jail where he was given an additional medical evaluation by the nurse on staff. Safety Tip: DWI doesn’t just apply to alcohol use. Officers have developed techniques to investigate all forms of intoxication. If you have any question about your degree of intoxication, take a ride share. DWI will not be tolerated by UTPD under any circumstances. 11/27/2019, 9:11 p.m., 2109 San Jacinto Boulevard (Belmont Hall) Criminal Trespass: An officer observed a subject enter the secured loading dock of Belmont Hall at a time when people do not typically access this area. The officer asked the subject if they were authorized to be there. The person stated they were going for a run that evening. The officer learned from dispatch that the person actually had a Criminal Trespass Warning for all UT Property, due to a previous assault charge. The person was arrested and transported to the Travis County Jail without further incident. Safety Tip: UTPD and many university staff use your ID to determine if you have permission to be in certain areas of campus. By observing patterns and recognizing what is out of the ordinary, this simple check can help prevent crime. In the vast majority of situations where someone is where they shouldn’t be, they are simply warned to leave. If they have already been issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and return, they are subject to arrest. These written warnings have been improved upon in recent years to include a map of campus and a clear explanation of what the warning entails. 11/30/2019, 8:50 a.m., 348 W. Dean Keeton Medical Emergency: UTPD, the Austin Fire Department, and Austin/Travis County EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive person lying on the ground. When officers arrived they recognized the subject as having a history of drug use and noticeable signs of recent drug use.
