He won a free pizza last week! On February 11th, Corley, called 911 to report a very belligerent subject. He actively talked to the person until UTPD officers arrived. We are thankful for his intervention. If you report a crime in progress, or take emergency action that saves a life, you too may qualify for a free pizza. The officer found them and observed slurred speech, staggering walk, dilated pupils, and various other signs of impairment. Various other clues indicated to the officer that the person had inhaled body spray to become impaired. The man was disoriented to the extent he was unsafe. He was taken to the Austin Sobering Center and left in the care of nurses there. Later he was provided with addiction resources. Safety Tip: By diverting this man to the Sobering Center, Travis County avoided the cost of incarcerating the man. UTPD saved time and the man was saved from a criminal charge. The Sobering Center is an invaluable partner in being proactive and efficient in addressing intoxication in Austin. February 14, 2020 at 8:06 p.m., 2400 Whitis Ave Duty Upon Striking Unattended Vehicle: UTPD received a call from our partners with Parking and Transportation Services. A parking attendant left his PTS vehicle to check parking, when a car struck the PTS Vehicle and drove away. A witness observed the driver exit his vehicle, inspect the damage, and then drive away. Safety Tip: Accidents happen, especially in our crowded part of town. If you’re driving and get in an accident with an unattended car you are required to leave your name, address, and contact information in a visible place. By not doing the right thing, you risk a criminal citation. It’s easier to accept responsibility than to appear in court to explain. Reminders Don’t forget to connect with UTPD via Twitter and Facebook, and remember you can reach out to your campus District Representative with any non-emergency concerns or questions you have. Other great social media resources include the Twitter feeds for UT Austin’s Office of Campus Safety and the Austin Police Department.
